Many future soldiers make the mistake that as soon as they arrive to basic training that they will get into the action of blowing up stuff, shooting and doing missions as what they have seen on hollywood movies such as Full Metal Jacket. We’ll it doesn’t exactly happen like that.
Once a recruit arrives to basic training, they will not start any physical training at all. No physical exercises, no missions or anything other than pushing paperwork! You will be sent to the Reception Battalion to turn in your personnel and financial records that you’ve receive from the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). If you arrive late (midnight or 1AM), expect to not get any rest because the in-processing begins at 0500 to the end of the day.
Here you will spend up to one to three weeks processing through 18 different stations under the control of the Drill Sergeants. During this time, your military records will be established and will follow you throughout your Army career. Below is some of the things you’ll do in reception.
CLOTHING. You will receive a full wardrobe of issued clothing such as your ACU’s, Dress Blues, winter boots, hot weather boots, patrol cap, underwear, socks, belts and etc. Make sure everything fits you properly so that you don’t have any future problems during training.
MEDICAL EVALUATION. You will get your vaccination, dental x-rays, and vision examination. If you wear eyeglasses, they will issued you new military eyewear.
FINANCE. Here you will establish your direct deposit at the finance department. Make sure your bank routing and account number is accurate so that you can get paid on time.
TROOP STORE. Your Drill Sergeants will take you to the troop store to purchase basic necessities that you will need for training. Also, you will receive an EZ-Pay Card that has a $250-300 advance which comes out of your first paycheck to pay for basic commodities at the troop store. Also, you will have to purchase your own tennis shoes.
Other things such as taking your self-portrait for your picture ID and yearbook, and getting your first military haircut..
ORIENTATION. After you’ve been issued your equipment, your Drill Sergeants will have an orientation in the auditorium with the recruits about sexual harassment, equal opportunity, discrimination and what is expected of you from the Army.
Your final day at the reception battalion is moving day in which you pack up all your gear and be transfer to your new company area to start your nine weeks of basic training and embarked your military career.
