Type 2 Diabetes – How Turmeric Works to Lower Blood Sugar Levels



Turmeric, a herb from India, comes from the compound curcumin and is related to ginger. It has shown promise for lowering blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes. Researchers at Harbin Medical University in Heilongjiang, China, conducted a study to determine how turmeric works. Their work was published in Biomedical Environmental Science in November 2014…

  • turmeric extracts containing curcuminoids, known for their antioxidant qualities, were given to 50 participants with Type 2 diabetes, while
  • a placebo was given to another 50 participants with Type 2 diabetes.

After three months of supplementation, the group given curcuminoids had lower blood levels of several molecules. The list includes…

  • adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP),
  • c-reactive protein,
  • tumor necrosis factor alpha, and
  • interleukin-6.

Statistical analysis showed the other molecules that went down did so because A-FABP went down. The cucurmoid group also showed higher levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.

  1. According to the International Journal of Obesity, A-FABP is released from fat cells and is associated with insulin resistance, the cause of Type 2 diabetes. C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interleukin-6 are associated with inflammation. Type 2 diabetes is an inflammatory disease and sufferers tend to have high levels of inflammatory molecules.
  2. SOD is an enzyme that breaks down free radicals, which are harmful to cells. It is given by injection for a wide range of illnesses. It is used for inflammation from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, injuries, kidney inflammation, cancer, lung problems in babies, certain kinds of cancer, and ingestion of certain types of weed killer. It can be applied topically to the eyes to help heal the corneas. It is also taken by mouth for conditions such as wrinkles, but it is not known whether it is absorbed through the digestive system.
  3. Diabetes is a disease of inflammation. It is a good assumption that lowering blood levels of inflammatory molecules and raising the level of an anti-inflammatory, would help to control it.

Turmeric has a peppery flavor and a fragrance somewhat like oranges. It is a perennial grown in mild climates with plenty of water. According to Dr. Weil, turmeric is an important spice for curries and the yellow pigment in mustard. The root is also used to make spice tea and can be found in over-the-counter supplements. Consult your doctor or dietitian about ways to add turmeric to a healthful diet.
