HOW IMPORTANT THE FAMILY UNIT IS IN RAISING OUR CHILDREN

The psychological need for belonging and love prominently features in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. A child is at the most vulnerable stage in life deserves warmth, security, love, and a sense of belonging from a strong functioning family unit.

Family influences culture and culture defines a specific type of community. Stable families equal a progressive community.

Family, one of the oldest established institutions in the world, has over time evolved in unique ways but still maintained its position as an essential provider of physical, emotional, and social support for many people. The first relationship that a child cultivates is with its Family. It is here that their foremost needs for physical, emotional, or social support are fulfilled.

The Family provides security, a warmth of belonging somewhere in this big world. The Family becomes the first school for a child. Home is where they learn how to speak, to walk, to feed themselves, they learn about other humans and their characteristics. It is in this environment that they discover themselves, acquire the awareness of self, their likes, dislikes, mostly influenced by the people around them. It is here too that the child experiences lessons on loving and caring for one another. They learn good values that are modeled by adults and older siblings within the institution of the Family.

Family to a child is armor against heartbreaks, loneliness, and rejection. The vulnerability of children dictates that Family is where the child is protected against emotional, psychological, and physical abuse. It is in the Family that the child acquires their first role models. Adults and siblings that they desire to emulate. Family plays a significant part in influencing children’s social, career, and academic ambitions. Siblings help to shape the child’s initial social experiences.

The relationships developed with their siblings form the groundwork for other social connections for a child. They become each other’s confidants and learn to take care of each other. A child raised in a functional family unit is advantaged in various aspects of life. These children tend to be healthier physically, emotionally, and seem to perform better academically.

The opposite also happens when a child is raised in a dysfunctional family or finds themselves without a family altogether. Children exposed to violence, drugs, and emotional abuse at the family level are predisposed to criminal activities, drug-related problems, and violence.

The family unit’s role in the development of a society cannot be overemphasized. It is our duty as adults and the decision-makers in society to create suitable environments for children to learn, grow, and thrive, at least for all our futures.
