Meghan Markle’s claim that the Royal family had concerns about Archie possibly having “dark” skin has prompted a barrage of online fury, with many viewers and fans denouncing the alleged incident as “blatant racism.”
Meghan made the allegation during a fiery interview with Oprah Winfrey on CBS Sunday night. Markle, who has a mixed race background, claims that the Royal family had concerns that Archie, her firstborn with Prince Harry, would be born with dark skin.
“All around this same time, we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title and also concerns and conversations as how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she said.
Meghan explained that Prince Harry relayed the information to her “from conversations that family had with him.”
Later in the two-hour interview, Meghan also revealed that she had suicidal thoughts as the UK media pushed negative stories about her, but the Royal family refused to help. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she said.
Viewers and fans of Meghan immediately took to Twitter to condemn the Royal family over the allegation.
“Archie not afforded the same privileges of other Royal children/babies is blatant racism. Concern about his complexion is blatant racism,” tweeted @PrincessKOut.
PBS White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor tweeted, “No title. No security. And multiple conversations about how dark Archie was going to be? I can’t. I cannot. Nothing that is said in that interview will be surprising or lead to that family no longer being ‘royal.’ Their blatant anti Black racism is tolerated and celebrated,” tweeted @iHartEricka.
