The Benefits of Having a Life Mentor

When you’re young, you have the whole world in front of you. It’s exciting, and let’s face it, a very stressful time. Sometimes having a bit of help in navigating these waters can be a good idea. One of the best ways to get that help is to work with a life mentor, especially before you’ve hit middle age.

What Exactly is a Life Mentor?

If you were to look up the word “mentor” in the dictionary, you would find something akin to “an experienced or trusted advisor.” So it stands to reason that a life mentor is trusted to provide honest feedback and advice on living the best possible life. They’ve been where you are and most likely know the best way to get to where you want to be.

But not all life mentors are the same. Some people claiming to be wise and experienced don’t exactly fit the bill. So if you’re looking around for a life mentor, here are a few things to keep in mind.

They Will Let You Experience Life

For most people, finding a life mentor means that they’re on the fast track to success in their life. Jobs will come easy, their love and romantic interest will beat a path to their door, and their children will always be spotless and clean.

A true-life mentor knows that’s not exactly how it works. There will be setbacks. There will be break-ups. There will be losses in your career, and let’s face it; kids will never be clean. A good life mentor understands all that and will not shield you from the troubles in life.

Instead, they will teach you how to deal with them and plan for them in your future. Are you worried about being able to live in the high rise condo in ten years? A life mentor will talk with you about your financial choices now and advise you on what to do to make that dream a reality.

They Know When to Bring in Help

One of the best signs of a good life mentor is their ability to look at a situation and say, “not my area of expertise.” They can’t be everything to all people. So instead of giving unsound advice, they’ll direct you where to start looking for the help you need. If they discover that you want to get in better shape, they might send you to a personal trainer who has had success with in the past. Upset that talking with your teenager is becoming a battle rather than a blessing? If they don’t have the personal experience to back up their words, they might direct you to a parenting group that has had success reaching out to teenagers.

The point is that a life mentor is there to help you make choices, not make them for you. They’ll use the wisdom and knowledge they’ve acquired over the years and help you build the best life that you can.
