HOW WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO ACCEPT AND RESPECT ALL RACES

2020 is an incredibly memorable year. It is the year when the world came to a standstill with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is also the year where the Black Lives Movement caught the attention of the world and elicited discussions centering on racial identity, revealing certain societal injustices and prejudices experienced by some people based on their racial backgrounds.

 Race is a social construct used to identify people by the color of their skin,  physical characteristics, behaviors, and cultural affiliations.  There exists a history of racial grouping as it is associated with principles that profiled some races as superior to others. The greatest propagators of racial categorization in history used it to create social boundaries, discrimination, and denied opportunities to people of color. It was also used to curb economic wealth building for people of color, thereby limiting generational gains in capital.   

When a child is born into a family, they do not have a say regarding the race or identity they acquire from birth. They learn and adapt to the environment just as they find it. Their values, beliefs, behavior, and actions are then aligned to those of the family they find themselves born within.

If a child is not exposed in any way to people who are different from them, they may grow up not understanding how to appreciate those who are culturally diverse from them; they only learn to accept those similar to them both physically and culturally. It is at this point that children should be introduced to the aspect of racial diversity and inclusiveness in society.

By educating children in the early stages of growth and development helps with assimilation and creates the right awareness of the presence of people who are different, highlighting the importance of embracing these differences in a positive manner.  An analogy I remember growing up was when my teacher talked of the different flowers that existed. That lilies did not stop being beautiful because roses and daisies existed.

She clearly explained that all the flowers, no matter how different they were, made the garden even more attractive. This is how the various races in the world are. They color the world. They make the garden that is earth even more beautiful. It may be a simplistic way of approaching the issue of race, but it worked! At a young age, I saw the beauty of diversity. That is the first lesson in teaching children about other races and having genuine conversations about our commonalities.

In schools, lessons on appreciating diversity need to be emphasized. Mainly because some students go through their entire school years and never interact with a  diverse group of students. In the same environments, children should be encouraged to interact with different races to foster a good understanding of each other and develop healthy relationships. 

At our homes, we must encourage the consumption of positive content from the media. To ensure that children are protected from content propagating hate towards other races. In the same breath, we should also avoid language that insinuates and arouses negative perceptions about other races when we speak to and around our children. It is essential that we also make them aware of the markers of racist behavior for them to avoid.

Diversity exists in all aspects of our lives. It is then of utmost importance that we all learn how to live and thrive in it peacefully. Teaching acceptance and respect for all races to our children is the first step towards enhancing the quality of life for future generations.
